Architecture
In 1970 a restaurant and guest rooms were added to the original farmhouse, which had been in our family for 3 generations; after that the business was run as a hotel. We, Juliane and Guy Moosbrugger-Jourdain, took over in May 1991.
From the planning stage to the renovation
We thought long and hard about what we should do about the house, which was in desperate need of renovation. We made lots of plans, none of which came to fruition. We did not want a size increase; our aim was to offer outstanding quality and to reinstate the existing Wälderhaus as the main building.
We were fortunate enough to have Helmut Dietrich with whom to work out a suitable solution. The former Wälder house had been the family home of Helmut’s mother, so he felt a very personal connection to the house and its occupants. It did take several years to develop the best way forward (size, cost, etc...), but in 2016 we had got there, and in May the renovation work could begin.
Hand crafted in the Bregenzerwald
Our working relationship with the architects’ office was excellent. Since their views largely tallied with our own, there were very few contradictory opinions. It was very important to us that the contracts went to local firms, and that the interior design and fittings, such as furniture, should be made in nearby workshops. This was just something we felt strongly about. The building itself, its interior design and facilities, the cuisine (using local products, no pre-packed items), and our own interaction with the guests – we wanted everything to fit seamlessly together, and we have managed to achieve this.
The total project would never have been a success without such good architects, and this is a fact that many of our guests have endorsed. With the benefit of hindsight we believe that we have done the right thing.
